My name is Kate Bland. I am a Shropshire (UK) based psychotherapist, counsellor, trainer & coach.
I am both a fully qualified Human Givens Practitioner (HG.Dip.P) and practicing Medical Doctor with over 20 years of experience. I have worked in therapy, occupational medicine, addiction services and General Practice.
I have Breathworks training in mindfulness and meditation.
My wealth of experience with individuals and businesses allows me to effectively provide therapy and coaching to anyone looking to improve their mental health.
My style is collaborative, and I stay close to my clients’ goals. I am committed to my clients’ wellbeing and I adapt and use a range of techniques rather than one specific therapy model and continuously study new developments in the field.
I provide a compassionate and safe space for you to express whatever challenges you currently face. I look forward to helping with:
Human givens is unlike other types of therapy. As a Human Givens psychotherapist I look at the areas where a person’s life is, and is not, working well. My goal is to identify the missing emotional need or misused resources in patients’ lives. I work with adults, children, and organisations.
This pragmatic and adaptable framework allows me to tailor brief, highly personalised interventions that integrate the most effective elements of therapeutic styles, such as CBT, interpersonal therapy, reflective listening, mindfulness and guided imagery, with education and solution-driven thinking.
Patients can expect to receive education about their specific problem. I will also help patients take on a healthier perspective, learn the skills necessary to resolve their difficulty and rehearse making changes in their lives. Most patients see significant progress in a short time due to my practical, problem-focused approach.
The Human Givens (HG) is an approach to therapy that encompasses the latest knowledge from neurobiology and psychology. It offers a holistic, scientific framework for understanding how individuals and society work. We have nine main emotional needs: the need for security, autonomy, status, and privacy, to feeling connected to others through friendship, having meaning and purpose, competence and achievement, attention exchange, and a sense of belonging.
People have an innate set of resources, an instinctive knowledge that drives us to meet these needs. Together, these needs and resources make up the core of Human Givens approach. When some of these needs are not met—perhaps because of misused resources, a toxic environment, or inadequate or faulty knowledge—individuals may become distressed and can develop mental health problems that negatively impact their lives and relationships.
Psychotherapists who use HG approach offer practical help that deals with mental and emotional distress in the here and now. They avoid spending a great deal of time exploring the past and its influences on patients’ issues or going on long, complex voyages of self-discovery into the patients’ psyche. In a short number of sessions, they aim to give patients the coping skills to address the immediate issue.
